Power System Analysis is one of the sub areas of Power System Engineering. Power System Analysis itself covers many sub topics such as stability analysis, contingency analysis, fault analysis, protection, applications of Artificial Intelligence, loss minimization, power quality, distributed generation and economic operation. The main area of research is power system stability analysis. Power system stability refers to the ability of a power system steady voltages at all buses after subjected to a disturbance from a given operating condition. Increase in demand for electrical power and limited network improvement has caused the power system to operate in a stressed condition. Therefore today’s power systems are increasingly experiencing low voltages and voltage collapse. They posed a primary threat to power system stability, security and reliability. Power system stability analysis is important since the results from the analysis could reflect the stability condition of a system. The results from the analysis could also alert the power system operator to take some preventive action in order to avoid any incident of voltage to the system and hence security of the system is maintained. Consequently development of techniques to improve the stability condition of a power system becomes an intensive research area. As a result of voltage stability improvement, the system could operate in least transmission losses and hence increased its efficiency and also reduction in the cost of operation. The application of Artificial Intelligence techniques on the other hand could improve the performance of the analysis and also the stability improvement techniques. With the application of Artificial Intelligence techniques, analysis could be performed at least computation time, high accuracy and minimized cost.
